Botelix

Botelix calculates statutory deposit fees on beverage packaging and adds a distinct deposit fee line at WooCommerce cart and checkout. It supports national deposit-return systems across six European countries with statutory rates, bottle multipliers, and correct VAT treatment.

Under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR, Article 44), Member States must establish deposit-return systems to reach at least 90% separate collection of single-use plastic beverage bottles and metal cans. Botelix automates compliance for online beverage retailers.

Botelix implements the exact statutory rates, currencies, and tax rules for each supported country:

  1. Poland (System Kaucyjny):

    • Act: Ustawa o gospodarce opakowaniami i odpadami opakowaniowymi (Dz.U. 2023 poz. 1852, as amended).
    • Statutory deposit: 0.50 PLN for plastic bottles up to 3L and metal cans up to 1L; 1.00 PLN for reusable glass bottles up to 1.5L.
    • Tax treatment: Non-taxable (statutory security deposit outside standard VAT base).

  2. Romania (Sistemul de Garantie-Returnare - SGR):

    • Act: Hotararea Guvernului nr. 1074/2021 privind stabilirea sistemului de garantie-returnare pentru ambalaje primare nereutilizabile, Article 6(1).
    • Statutory deposit: 0.50 RON per packaging unit (single-use glass, plastic, metal 0.1L to 3L).
    • Tax treatment: Non-taxable (statutory guarantee outside standard VAT base).

  3. Austria (Einwegpfand):

    • Act: Pfandverordnung fur Einweggetrankeverpackungen (BGBl. II Nr. 283/2023, Section 4).
    • Statutory deposit: 0.25 EUR per bottle or can (0.1L to 3L).
    • Tax treatment: Taxable (statutory Pfand includes Austrian VAT).

  4. Germany (Pfand / DPG):

    • Act: Verpackungsgesetz / Verpackungsdurchfuehrungsgesetz (Section 46 VerpackDG, formerly Section 31 VerpackG).
    • Statutory deposit: 0.25 EUR per single-use packaging unit.
    • Tax treatment: Taxable (statutory Pfand includes German VAT).

  5. Slovakia (Zalohovy system):

    • Act: Zakon c. 302/2019 Z. z. o zalohovani jednorazovych obalov na napoje, Section 3.
    • Statutory deposit: 0.15 EUR per packaging unit.
    • Tax treatment: Non-taxable.

  6. Hungary (DRS / MOHU Repont):

    • Act: 450/2023. (X. 4.) Korm. rendelet a visszavaltasi dijas rendszerrol, Article 4.
    • Statutory deposit: 50 HUF per single-use container.
    • Tax treatment: Non-taxable.

How the calculation works

  1. Country resolution: When the cart evaluates fees, Botelix checks the customer shipping country (falling back to billing country, and finally the store base country).
  2. Export exemption: If the destination country is outside the configured schemes or outside the EU, no statutory deposit is added.
  3. Packaging matching: Products marked as subject to deposit (_botelix_deposit_enabled) are examined:
    • Single units receive the country statutory rate.
    • Multipacks (e.g. 6-pack, 24-can crate) multiply the rate by _botelix_deposit_multiplier.
    • Variable products inherit settings from the parent product unless overridden on the specific variation.
  4. Checkout fee display: The total calculated deposit is added as an individual fee line (Deposit (Pfand / SGR / Kaucja)), visible in classic checkout and Cart/Checkout Blocks.

Product settings

Section titled “Product settings”

On the product edit screen under Product Data > Inventory (or General):

  • Enable statutory deposit: Activates deposit calculation for this product.
  • Deposit scheme: Automatically resolved per customer country or fixed to a specific scheme.
  • Packaging multiplier: Number of deposit units in this product (default 1; set to 6 for a 6-pack).
  • Custom deposit amount: Optional override of the national statutory rate if custom contract rules apply.

Store settings

Navigate to WooCommerce > Settings > Botelix DRS:

  • Enable DRS calculation: Global master toggle.
  • Active countries: Multi-select enabled jurisdictions (Poland, Romania, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary).
  • Currency conversion mode: Auto-convert to store currency using configured exchange rates, or charge native currency if multi-currency checkout is enabled.
  • Fee label: Customizable label rendered on the checkout and receipt (defaults to Deposit (statutory)).

Developer filters

Section titled “Developer filters”
  • botelix/supported_schemes - Filters the list of supported national DRS regimes and rates.
  • botelix/cart_deposit_amount - Filters the computed fee amount before adding to cart totals.
  • botelix/customer_country - Overrides the detected jurisdiction code.
